What is social listening and how does this dashboard work?
Social listening tracks online conversations across social media, forums, and news sites to understand the “why” behind what people are saying about specific topics.
The Health Equity Works dashboard focuses on health equity conversations, using software to aggregate real-time discussions and provide qualitative insights into the values and stories driving online dialogue, enabling you to strategically prepare for, engage in and respond to discussions while refining your overall communications strategy.
This dashboard is designed for communications strategy and planning, not in-depth research. Use it to:
- Develop proactive marketing and communications strategies
- Identify trending topics and language for content creation
- Find gaps in conversations where you can add value
- Gather real-world stories and anecdotes for campaigns
- Optimize SEO and social media copy
- Identify potential collaboration opportunities
The software operates within privacy restrictions and only captures a representative sample of online content—not every public post is accessible. The data is best understood qualitatively rather than quantitatively. While the numbers are useful for relative comparisons, they don’t represent the complete volume of online conversations about these topics.
The dashboard was built and is maintained using an extensive dataset of keywords and phrases, but sometimes unrelated or offensive content gets pulled in, and relevant content might be missed. We regularly monitor and fine-tune our data, but if you notice trends of inappropriate content or significant missing conversations, please reach out to us.

Remember that social media algorithms favor divisive and controversial content, and bots can drive hollow conversations. The most widely circulated posts don’t tell the complete story. Authentic engagement differs from reach when it comes to understanding real influence—a smaller Reddit thread with thoughtful discussion may be more valuable than a viral tweet with thousands of likes. We’ve designed our visualizations to give you both volume insights and opportunities to dig deeper into meaningful conversations.
Right now we have the National Dashboard available, with state-focused dashboards and additional options coming soon.
